Bechdels at
the Studio Door

by Batya MacAdam-Somer
March 2017

The Bechdels are Bonnie Lander, Batya MacAdam-Somer, and Meghann Welsh. We sing together and sometimes accompany ourselves, occasionally letting the instruments take over.

Our set tonight comprises music of the Renaissance, old American songs, arrangements of pop tunes, and a newly composed work- with a bit of improvisation tossed in. With In My Room, the classic Beach Boys tune, Batya reworked the song with Gregorian chant in mind. This is a stripped down version, highlighting the song's unique chordal structure. Meghann Welsh introduced the group to three beautiful Tom Wait's tunes: Favorite Color, Woe, and Lullaby. In Favorite Color, our voices come together Andrew Sisters style, with a somber twist. We thought Meghann's voice and singing saw perfect for the tender and delicate Woe, and we added some violin harmonics as a compliment. Woe and Lullaby are framed on either end by some improv- we hope you enjoy the mingling sounds of horse hair against metal. Bonnie brightened up Lou Reed's Make Up with awesomely colorful harmonies and voicings, bringing out the celebratory nature of the tune. Clinton Davis, old-time American music junky, generously arranged Cabin on the Hill for us. We sing Those Memories as a shout out to the badass supergroup trio of Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt. Bonnie rocks the double bass on this one! We can't resist singing some of the 15th/16th French-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez's beautiful polyphonic vocal music. And we're thrilled to present a piece written for us by the fabulous Bob Pierzak, titled Wash Away Your Sins
